Besides the foot hills of the biodiversity hotspot, Western Ghats with amazing view of vivid greeny collections Emmanuel college sprout in the year 1995 with lush green branches. During the span of journey based on the motto “Train to live and serve”, the department of Botany and Biotechnology emerged in 2005.
Ms. Sreeja S. S is the Head of the department, Mrs. Anisha V.R (from 2010), Dr. Jino John (from 2010), Dr. Saleem Jose.D ( from 2015) and Mrs. Jancy (from 2020) are the team of faculty members.
The department offers B.Sc Botany and Biotechnology dual core programme designed to develop a scientific attitude and an interest towards the modern areas of biotechnology in particular and life science in general. It is aimed to get an aptitude in Biotechnology without losing the importance of basic science such as botany. The courses are designed to impart the essential basics in Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
The programme consists of Language courses, Foundation courses, Biochemistry as Complementary course, Botany as core course, biotechnology as vocational core course and open or elective courses. There are two foundation courses, one is focused on the modern information technology, statistics and its application in modern life sciences, and a general introduction and awareness on biotechnology and its influence in human life. The second foundation course is to give a general introduction and awareness in the general instrumentation and its principle and is application in biology and biotechnology, in addition to give biophysical basics.
The various courses in the programme is aimed to develop proficiency in the theory as well as practical experiments, common equipments, laboratory along with the collection and interpretation and presentation of scientific data in proper manner. Well-equipped lab adds adequate practical knowledge in Botany, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and plant tissue culture.
UV Spectrophotometer, Cooling Centrifuge, Incubator, Laminar air flow chamber, Hot air Oven, Autoclave, Double Distillation unit, pH Meter, Electrophoresis unit, UV Transilluminator.
Students, who pursue this programme and pass out successfully, will surely have an urge to continue higher studies in Biotechnology or Botany and contribute significantly in its development. The students of our department are positioned in various research institutes, Biotech companies, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and laboratories.
Candidates shall be admitted to the course provided he/ she have passed plus two examinations of the state or central board with biology as one of the subjects.
